Exhibition Introduction
Starting in 2023, we have started an exchange exhibition between YARTGALLERY (Seoul in Korea) and gallery 176 (Osaka in Japan). So far, gallery 176 has held Kang Jae-gu’s photo exhibition “Soldier”, Kim Eun-ju’s photo exhibition ” Again, SPRING”, and Jeoung Myoung-sik’s photo exhibition ” CLEAR MIND AS STILL WATER”. This time, we will move the location to Seoul, Korea, and hold TOMONAGA Yusuke and NISHIKAWA Yoshiyasu’s photo exhibition “input x output | input = output” at YARTGALLERY.
gallery 176 is an independent gallery jointly run by eight photographers, and TOMONAGA and NISHIKAWA are members of the gallery’s management team. This exhibition will feature TOMONAGA and NISHIKAWA’s jointly planned work “input x output”, TOMONAGA’s work “Shasin-soshi”, and NISHIKAWA’s “gardens”.
The “input x output” in the exhibition title “input x output | input = output” refers to the title of the works in which TOMONAGA and NISHIKAWA swapped each other’s shooting methods (film, digital) and each interpreted and printed the other’s photographs. “input = output” represents the works of TOMONAGA and NISHIKAWA, in the sense that the same artist took the photographs and printed them.

Artwork Description
TOMONAGA Yusuke and NISHIKAWA Yoshiyasu “input x output”
Tomonaga usually shoots with black-and-white films and prints his works in the darkroom. Nishikawa, on the other hand, shoots with digital cameras, develops RAW images on a computer, and creates color works on an inkjet printer.
In this project, these two photographers attempted to exchange (eXchange) their shooting methods (input), select works from each other’s films and data based on their own interpretations, and finish (output) their works in their own way.
Tomonaga received the black-and-white films taken by Nishikawa with film cameras and finished his works as black-and-white prints, while Nishikawa received the RAW data taken by Tomonaga with a digital camera and finished his works on a computer.
Did the finished work turn out as the photographer intended? Or did they turn out completely different?
TOMONAGA Yusuke “Shashin-soshi”
This work was created by walking around various cities with a camera and photographing the people and scenery I encountered there.

NISHIKAWA Yoshiyasu “gardens”
NISHIKAWA studied landscape architecture at university and worked as a landscape architect. Up until now, he has presented works related to landscape architecture and gardens, which are his starting point, such as “garden” (2020), “Machi-wa-niwa” (2021, the city is a garden), which likens the lush cityscape of Taiwan to “gardens” created unconsciously by humans, and “Machi-no-niwa” (2022, a garden in the city), which captures parks that blend into or are buried within structures in Japanese cities (buildings, elevated roads).
This exhibition will feature a reconfiguration of these three garden-related works. Come and see the “gardens” of Japan (Kyoto, Osaka) and Taiwan through NISHIKAWA’s eyes.

gallery 176 (Osaka in Jpan)
gallery 176 was founded on the principle of self-driven operation, with the goal of providing a space where members can showcase their photography work. Further, members are constantly seeking external interactions and exchanges that help propel their photography in a sound and healthy way and avoid complacency.
To date, gallery 176 has showcased numerous solo and group exhibitions by our members, as well as organized special exhibitions by non-member photographers and collaborative exhibitions with other galleries from both Japan and abroad.
gallery 176 also holds events and workshops, such as movie screenings, photobook sales, and question and answer sessions for up and coming photographers (‘Shashin wo Miru Kai’).
Additionally, gallery 176 has been proactively expanding its reach beyond its gallery space, both domestically and in to Asian countries. Gallery members have also taken active roles in the world of photography outside the gallery, including running photo galleries and teaching classes.
