Artists Introduction
IKUKO SUZUKI “untitled”
Artwork Description
I have taken these photographs between 2008 and 2015 when I became interested in landscapes whilst traveling around Japan. My journeys took me to Tohoku, Shikoku, Kyushu, Hokkaido and Okinawa, and I visited many peninsulas and islands. I encountered many seas and rivers, many small mountain villages, many fishing towns, as well as, of course, numerous lighthouses.
At the beginning of each year, I forward planned my springtime trip over the Golden Week, the longest national holiday in Japan. So in this book you will see cherry blossoms in April and carp streamers lighting up the sky on Children’s Day in May. I like waterfronts, therefore there will also be many lighthouses.
I rented a car at my destination and travelled long distances through the land. Landscapes of mountain passes may look similar, however, my sense is that if I was able to capture something special, it was only at that place at that time that my photograph could have been taken. That is, I feel as if, each place led me to its world.

Nahoyo ONO “SEASIDE”
Artwork Description
There were no seas around the place I was brought up. The seas I had imagined were glittering and of a clear, blue color, like the sort of seas one would see in a resort area. “Let’s go to the sea.” I tried approaching the seas while I was bearing such a thought. The dream-like beach I had imagined wasn’t there. But one thing I found out was the chaotic streets that stood tall on the beach remained unchanged and still is connected to the distant seas of my dream.

TOMONAGA Yusuke “Okinawa”
Artwork Description
When I saw Miyuki Takeda walking down the streets of Koza in Okinawa, in a black and white movie, I became aware of Okinawa for the first time.
That movie was titled “ETREME PRIVATE EROS: LOVE SONG 1974” and was directed by Kazuo Hara.
Ten years later, I came across some photos taken in Okinawa by Shomei Tomatsu, a photographer.
Soon after that I headed there with my own camera.
On my yearly visits to Okinawa between 2002 and 2007, these photos were taken.

Matsubara Yutaka Local public bath “Sento”
Artwork Description
In Japan, there are unique mass culture places called “Sento (public bath)”.
I am currently taking documentary photographs of “Sento” in place where I live, Mie prefecture (known for Ise Jingu and Suzuka Circuit).
“Sento” are decreasing due to aging of facilities and managers, but there are a lot of male bath and female bath with different wall drawings, which makes the design also to be interesting and pleasant.
Also, could find historical marks in old “Sento”, expressing the passage of time and lived-in feeling, from old, long time used peculiar places (like cracked tiles lining on the wall).
Will present Japan’s mass culture, “Sento”, which soon may disappear, by detailed documentary photographs.
Shot by 4 x 5 inch camera with analog film

NISHIKAWA Yoshiyasu “in the garden”
Artwork Description
The English word ‘garden’ originates from the ancient Hebrew words ‘gan’ and ‘eden’, meaning ‘protection’ and ‘delight’ or ‘pleasure’ respectively. In the same vein, Sinji ISOYA, Doctor of Agriculture, said gardens should be a “safe and comfortable space” and something that evokes an “ideal world for humans”. (refer to “Nihon no Teien”).
I shoot photos while walking around gardens (mainly Japanese gardens). I just keep walking, stop sometimes, and start walking again. I do that repeatedly. My line of sight changes constantly while walking, bringing new landscapes into my sight. Trees, stones, moss, and running water come in and out of my vision. I spontaneously capture them if they inspire my aesthetic sense.
This series presents the fragments of my ideal landscape that I have captured in real gardens.
